The Lake District Osprey Project

In 2001 Ospreys made a momentous return to the Lake District, making Bassenthwaite Lake home to the only naturally occurring colony of Ospreys in England. Each spring ‘Green XS’ (the female) and ‘No Ring’ (the male) have returned from Africa to their double bed sized nest. They continue to wow visitors to Whinlatter Forest Park and the Dodd Wood Viewpoint with their fishing technique and their domestic dramas! Staff and Volunteers at the Lake District Osprey Project work tirelessly to promote the welfare of these birds and to bring them to as wide an audience as possible. As a result, the Bassenthwaite Ospreys are now a major tourist attraction with over 90,000 watchers in 2005 alone. Their presence provides and important and continued boost to the area, even during crisis periods such as Foot & Mouth disease.

Funds raised by business members of the Tourism & Conservation Partnership will help to develop the educational facilities at The Lake District Osprey project. These will include significant improvements to the nest camera which, provides a fascinating live link between the Osprey Nest and the Whinlatter Visitor Centre.
