This bridleway on the shores of Ullswater is used by over 70,000 visitors
each year and is therefore a high profile project. The Lake District
National Park Authority has identified over 20 different jobs to be undertaken
on the path.
The Project
In the past work
has included widening and resurfacing the footpath from Howtown landing
across Howtown bay beach. The Lake District National Park Authority
carried out this enhancement work, including moving the fence line
back and removing two kissing gates which were then replaced by field
gates.
Since 2000 The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers have worked
on the project in cojeunction with the LDNPA. They have dug drains,
constructed specialist silt traps, water breaks and culverts. In addition,
they have installed 58 yards of new stone pitching and 35 yards of
other path improvements and landscaped 307 yards of path to minimise
erosion scars.
