Sustainable Tourism

The tourism industry in the Lake District and Cumbria depends greatly on the natural beauty of the landscape, and we are all aware of the need to protect it so that visitors, businesses and residents can continue to enjoy these spectacular mountains and lakes for many years to come.

The objective of sustainable tourism is to retain the economic and social advantages of tourism development while reducing or mitigating any undesirable impacts on the natural, historic, cultural or social environment.

Responsible Tourists in the Lake District and Cumbria can help by making choices based on a concern for the local environment and local culture.
